How to install the latest Windows 7 x64 Broadcom Bluetooth drivers for Sony Vaio VGN-SZ770N and possibly for many other notebooks
Sony produces great stuff, but when it comes to the drivers support, they are unbelievably inconsistent and confusing with their driver releases.
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ770N notebook and it was a painful experience to get Windows 7 32bit install with all the proper drivers, and for the 64bit, it was even harder.
Bluetooth was working only half way with the drivers and after Windows Update. My Bluetooth module was BCM2046 (which Windows detects as ALPS brand)
After some digging around with Google, I found this tool directly from Broadcom, which supposedly detects and automatically downloads the latest stack.
However, running the tool while the default Windows 7 driver is loaded, does not allow it to properly detect the Bluetooth module and it will not download the latest Broadcom software.
Well I looked further and I found some working 64bit drivers for Acer Aspire marked “Broadcom Bluetooth Driver v22.214.171.1240″ that I downloaded and installed and it enabled all of my Bluetooth functionality.
Then I ran again the Broadcom setup tool and it finally worked and downloaded the latest x64 stack which currently is version 126.96.36.19900. It now detects my Bluetooth as Sony Alps Device and works great!
